Salary Negotiation: Don't Be Emotional

One of the most difficult situations for an employee, is when he/she wants to ask for a salary raise. However, if you are well prepared and use the right approach then you can negotiate an amount of money that both you and your boss can be happy with. There's nothing wrong when asking for a raise, if you do it professionally.

And here are some suggestions:

First do some thinking. What are those negotiating techniques you could implement when asking for a salary raise? When is the best time to ask for a raise? What is the best way to ask for a raise? It all depends.

Stay focused. Prepare your mind for success. This is quite vital. If you don't expect your boss to listen to you then how do you expect to get a salary raise?

When negotiating your salary it's important to be flexible and have alternative plans. For example your boss may not offer you more money but different benefits like stock options, tuition reimbursement etc. Will you be happy then?

The majority of employers ask for a raise without even knowing their market. This is a big mistake. Do some salary and job research and see what other employees in your field earn. This will strengthen your position when negotiating your salary with your boss.

See what you worth in the market. You must think like a freelancer. Search for other job opportunities, talk to other companies, get offers, see what your value is in your area of expertise. You may need to make career moves. The bureau of labor statistics is a great resource. check it out.

Don't use your emotions to outsmart your boss. You will not win. Your boss is probably experienced enough to not fall for these techniques. Just don't bring emotions when negotiating your salary. Be professional and always give your boss enough time to think what he/she can do for you.

Take your future in your hands. Stop being manipulated by your employer. Get the salary raise you deserve using powerful psychological and other secret techniques. Make your plan, prepare yourself, start negotiating your salary and beat your boss! Good luck.

Negotiating Salary Tips

For someone who is employed one of the hardest things to do is trying to negotiate their salary. Many people are afraid to confront their boss about a possible pay raise and have no idea as to how to approach the issue. And, once they do get a chance to talk about their pay they do not know how to effectively make a case for a salary hike.

Understanding how to properly and effectively negotiate your salary is an important aspect of your job. Sometimes you can not just wait for the next pay raise, and you need to confront the issue. This article should help you with some tips on negotiating your salary.

A very common mistake that many people make when trying to speak with their boss about their salary is that they are unrealistic with their requests. You can not try and increase your salary by some ridiculous amount because you feel you deserve it. You have to be reasonable with your requests. Understand where you are with in the company and try to work from a reasonable stand point when asking for a pay increase.

If you are going to ask for a raise then you need to have something to prove what you are worth. For people who are just being hired you should bring in proof of your salary from a previous job. This shows your future boss what you were being paid and that you are not just making numbers up.

If you are asking for a raise then bring in some form of performance goals that you have met or things that you have done to go above and beyond your daily workload. Do not expect to go to your boss and ask for a raise just because you want one or feel like you deserve it. You need to have reasonable proof that shows you are worthy of the next level.

You are going to need to need to be flexible. Expecting a direct raise in your base salary may not be realistic, but if you look at other ways to increase your overall compensation then you may get more out of your negotiations. Instead of just concentrating on a higher salary, maybe think about getting some form of bonus or an increase in your health insurance plans. This may make it easier on the company, in a cost effective way, to help both you and the company out.

Going to your boss and simply asking for a raise is going to be tough to do. One way to possibly grab his or her attention is to come up with some form of performance goals for yourself. This way the company will see a benefit from your hard work and you can be rewarded.

These are all great ways to approach your boss next time you look for a raise. The most important part is being prepared and being realistic.

Legal Secretary Salary

I've been working as a legal secretary for over 20 years and as far as my work is concerned, I believe it's one of the best secretarial positions one can hope for. The legal secretary salary is decent and there is always demand for the legal secretaries. I advanced to become a paralegal after being a legal secretary for two years. My salary has since then, increased by 20%, although I never took a paralegal course. Two years of work experience as a legal secretary helped me immensely and I was promoted to this job by my senior lawyer.

Lawyers and professionals in law field have plethora of responsibilities and duties to handle. A day in the life of a successful lawyer is filled with hectic schedules and meetings. Since an individual can't handle every possible detail and multitask every possible work, he/she needs skilled people who can manage various important facets related to his/her work.

Every lawyer has to, at some stage of his career, hire legal secretaries that can assist them for works pertaining to their field. In the recent years, when the law field has gained recognition to be one of the most reputed and successful careers in the US, the need of law secretaries have also risen.

There is a general misconception that paralegal salary range is exactly similar to that of legal secretary salary range. The fact is that, although paralegals or lawyer assistants share some of the same duties, they may not earn equal and their educational qualifications may differ drastically.

While legal secretaries need not have extensive degrees in law subjects, paralegals have bachelor's or associates degree in paralegal studies. In the initial years, the legal secretary salary, like for various other salary ranges for jobs, is less and they can make around US $30,000 annually. Dominantly, the salary of a legal secretary depends on following factors:

With excellent administrative skills, legal secretaries can command very good salaries and can work with top law firms. Lawyers of big firms generally want people who can manage their accounts and also prepare legal documents pertaining to their finances.

Generally, the smaller a firm is, lesser would be the legal secretary salary. Salaries in the initial years is expected to be very less. After some years of work experience, one can work with larger firms were there are various career opportunities. Bigger firms provide health benefit insurance covers, 401(k) match and annual bonuses.

The legal secretaries having work experience of more than a year and less than four years can earn any where between US $30,000 to US $45,000. The legal secretaries having work experience between five to nine years earn a salary of about US $38,000 to US $54,000. Write Your Way to Success With Article Marketing

Following months of trying to convince his boss that he should invest in a company website, Clive finally gave up and decided to go it alone. The year was 1996 and the internet was still very young. That said, it was already possible to have a professional, online shop built which he was determined to do. He took out a few loans and remortgaged his house to come up with the £12.000 he needed to have the first fully functional online shop for promotional gifts designed and online before any other company in the UK. He did it. The world was going to be his oyster! Or was it?

Following the site’s launch, he began to attract a few customers and a lot of interest from the larger competitors who had millions to throw at such ventures. After just one year in business, he was contacted by a company director of what was at the time the biggest promotional gift supplier in the UK. They wanted him and his company and asked to meet with him to discuss the advantages of becoming part of their huge promotional gifts machine! Needless to say, Clive couldn’t believe his luck and met up with several corporate highflyers over the following few weeks. He could see why they wanted him but also realised that he was still a small-time promotional gift supplier who had only managed to turn over £130,000 in his first year.

The excitement was short lived. Like many big corporations at the time, they wanted people like Clive but they wanted to pay peanuts. His small business was really of no use to them nor did they need his website: they could purchase the best websites money could buy. But as an employee Clive could help propel them into the internet age. They wanted him for his drive but his ambition would be regulated by those at them top. The scenario seemed all too familiar to Clive. He would have to do as he was told again and his aspirations would be limited by those at the top with big wallets but relatively little understanding about what he was trying to do or of just how significantly the world was changing.

The funny thing is, many corporate bigwigs still don’t understand it fully in 2010! They have either grown very comfortable or perhaps they have always been a little too comfortable.

We will return to Clive later in this article.

We live in a new age of business with new rules and a lot more opportunities. Think about it, just a few years ago you still had to be ‘big’ to really make a difference in your industry. The people at the top, those with the money, were in charge. They were the ones who could afford to have new brochures printed every month and sent out to hundreds of thousands of potential customers. They were the ones who could afford the most sophisticated nicely designed websites. They had the power, the sales staff in fancy cars and the impressive offices. And ‘they’ are now the past if ‘they’ don’t wake up and understand the new business world in which many of their smaller competitors are already thriving.

You hold the keys to your own future. No longer should you allow those at ‘the top’ to rule you or your industry. You can write your own future and success story through blogs, article marketing and proper search engine optimization of your own company website or that of your employer. The future has never looked so good for those who used to take the orders and here you will find out how.

Article Marketing

Through article writing you can literally change your world or at least your industry. Whether you work for a company or you own your own business, your articles can help propel you to the top of your profession. It is not necessary to be the reincarnation of Hemingway. What is important is that you offer valuable information to those who seek it. Gain their respect and they will want to read more and your articles could even get republished on blogs and websites offering you even more publicity.

Article marketing is a complex topic which really deserves its own article or book. But we can at least look here at how article marketing can be used by you.

You start by writing articles about your products, services and/or industry. Your articles should be at least 400 words long and keyword rich. The articles are meant to be informative and not simple PR about how great your company is. Most article depositories offer a where you can tell the reader about you and your company. This is called the resource box. When properly utilized you can used the resource box section to get links back to your website and possibly even an order from someone who has read your article and wants to use your services.

The more articles you write the better. Let’s look again at Clive’s company.

Clive’s company may have been the first online shop for promotional gifts but in 2007 he found that he was just like the other hundreds of promotional gifts suppliers who offered similar products online in their own shops. His biggest competitors were still those who had large marketing budgets and could afford expensive online and offline advertising. He was finding it difficult to get new customers but he did have a loyal customer base which he had built up over the years.

He decided to hire four sales reps to try to give his business the boost in needed and deserved. One of the salesmen was Gary. Gary and the other sales reps would be responsible for finding their own leads. They were all offered a small salary, car and of course commission for meeting their targets.

Now Gary was a keen writer and new some basic html so he went to work. As far as Clive knew, Gary would be finding customers the traditional way: knocking on doors, sending the company catalog and brochures to prospects, doing e-shots and picking up the phone trying to convince people to use his new promotional gifts company.

Clive was wrong.

During Gary’s time at the office, he would do exactly that. But when he was at home, he was secretly writing articles, hundreds of them. He wrote articles about promotional pens. He wrote about promotional mugs, mouse mats, stress balls, clothing, you name it, Gary wrote about it. He wrote about all of the products his company wanted to be selling a lot more of. An excellent writer he was not, but he had information to pass on and he got his message across loud and clear.

Within a few months, Clive’s company website began to feature quite highly in the search engines for a lot of the products his company sold. It was actually rating higher than much bigger companies who like his Clive knew nothing about article marketing and the free publicity it offered.

While Clive and his competitors were all spending thousands on expensive printed brochures and fancy cars for their sales managers, Gary was spending no more than his own time and the results were phenomenal.

Clive did not realise it yet but he could no longer do without Gary. Gary’s hundreds of articles belonged to Gary and no one else. The resource boxes were all pointing at his own blog and the URL of his employer. Gary’s articles could be pointed at whatever websites he wanted them to. This gave him the job security few people have.

After two years of employment, Gary had written nearly 2000 articles. Business was booming but his own personal sales were low as were the sales of the three other salesmen working for the company. Clive did not feel he could let all of his sales staff go but decided he should at least get rid of the one whose sales were the lowest. It was Gary.

One afternoon Clive told Gary he would like to meet with him the following morning to discuss business. This could only mean one thing but Gary was prepared.

He coolly walked into the office the next morning and knocked on his boss’s door. ‘Gary, I’m sorry,’ his Clive started, ‘but I am sure you are aware your sales are not amazing. We are going to have to let you go.’

Gary smiled. ‘You are free to let me go if you like, Clive, but first let me show you something that you may find of interest.’ Gary turned on his laptop and keyed ‘promotional pens’ into Google. On the first page alone two of his articles appeared as well as an organic listing to the company website. He keyed in over twenty other keywords each time bringing results either from his articles or organic listing to the company website.

‘You can let me go, but all of this will go with me, Clive. You see, Clive, it is your other sales reps, those who cost you money driving from client to client who should be shown the door. You do not even have a properly optimised site yet you are still featuring quite highly in the search engines and this is all down to me. I suggest you reconsider and perhaps I might just consider staying on and doing something about your site’s search engine optimisation as well.’

Needless to say, Gary was amazed by what Gary had done and was asked to stay on with a nice big pay rise.

Gary’s story is no longer unique. Many people, people like you, have taken their future into their own hands. They are writing their own success stories and they are doing it better and faster than the large bureaucratic companies of old could every dream of doing.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO). Power is in the words that you use.

Just like article marketing, search engine optimization (SEO) is a subject that really needs to be handled in a thick book and not just one short article. That said, we will touch on it here.

Just like article marketing, it is necessary to ensure each of your landing pages have a few paragraphs of text which describe what is on the page and why it is important. A promotional gift supplier like Gary could write something like the following on their Parker Pens section.

Promotional Parker Pens

Promotional Parker Pens at discounted prices. At OXOXOXOXOX Limited we specialise in express printing and engraving promotional Parker Pens. Here you will find a massive selection of Parker Pens that can be printed with your logo. Our most popular Parker Pens are the Parker Vector Rollerball Pen and the Jotter. Both of these low cost promotional pens are ideal for trade shows, exhibitions and postal marketing campaigns. If you are looking for something a little more up market, you may like to check out our Parker metal gift pens such as the Sonnet and the Frontier Pens….

Do you get them picture? By ensuring that each section of your website has keyword rich descriptions, you can help ensure that Google, Bing and the other search engines find your content of interest. It is important, however, not to write to impress the search engines but to impress the people who arrive on your site looking for information. Keywords are great but if you use too many or you use some too often it will look silly and your website visitor will go elsewhere.

Again, SEO is a huge subject to take on but if you are writing articles anyway, you should be able to use a lot of the content from your articles in the descriptions on your website and this will help you to rate higher in the search engines.

So what are you waiting for? Start writing or get someone who can do it for you today. Remember Clive was the first person in his industry to have an online shop but a few years later most of his competitors had them. It will not be long before a lot of your competitors are writing article as well so beat them to it! You will be happy you did.

Writing article cost no more than your time. If you do not have time, you could look for ghost writers familiar with your industry to do in quite inexpensively for you. The important thing is that it gets done.

Dan Toombs is Managing Director of CompuGift Limited, the UK's leading online supplier of promotional gifts. Compu Gift also offers a ghost writing service for businesses within the promotional gifts industry.

Peneliti Yakin Bumi Kiamat Tiap 27 Juta Tahun

Tapi, janganlah buru-buru panik.

Preparing For A Career Change

The time has come for a career change. You wish to switch careers and it's the only thing on your mind these days. Bored, fired, low pay or high ambition, there are any number of reasons for a career change. First things first! Don't fret. A career change is not as bad these days as it was made out to be in the olden days when there were fewer options for employment. But now, with highly paid jobs available and new skills that can be learnt over a few weeks, things have changed drastically. Many people have given up seemingly secure banking, government jobs etc and have opted for software jobs, creative jobs and even freelance options. All you need then is a bit of courage, a dash of self belief and some clarity of thought and you can join the band of people who have successfully changed careers.

If you are on the edge of changing careers, here are a few things you may want to do to get more clarity on your thought process. As always we must begin the process at home i.e. with ourselves. Firstly take an honest look at why you want to change your career. Junk the trash about bad boss, bad conditions etc because these reasons do not help you in your decision making process. Instead identify aspects about the job that you want, about qualities within you that you feel can be commercially and creatively expanded. In simple terms find out what excites you - meeting people, negotiating, writing, traveling, sports, communicating or whatever else. Once you know that this is the one thing you would like to do for your creative satisfaction then we can zero down to further career options. If on the other hand you are seeking to move because you wish more compensation, faster growth, travel etc, look to identify your qualities and experience that could land the kind of jobs you want. For example if you wish to be a software consultant and you have been working as an accountant, there are many finance related software skills that you can add to yourself to find a software career with an accounting background.

Identify what excites you the most and find a career that works around your passion. There are as many options as you want these days. If you conduct some research, you will be surprised at the kind of options that are available. From working from home to traveling abroad to setting up event management companies to providing creative consultancy, you can hop on to any career you wish. Normally most ex-jobs (even the most boring ones) leave you with a certain amount of basic skills that come in good stead for your career change. Organizational skills, communication skills, creative skills, administrative skills, leadership skills etc are skills that you can carry along with you to your new job. Identify those skills and work on them in a way that you can leverage them for you new career. This will give you a head start because most principles in business or arts work around a pattern and you can slot it into your pattern.

Find people you know in the new career you would like to get into and meet as many people in that business as you can. Their advise on how the industry works, the skill sets required and so on will be invaluable. Based your research you can narrow down your search to the courses or skills you need to add and where from. The process will also help you meet many new people who could be valuable resources in the new career search. It also helps to gain experience on the side, by working on projects or part time jobs.

A career change can be the one decision that could change your life for the better because it is a decision you would have taken consciously and responsibly. It is a decision you have taken for your own good and therefore you will work at it diligently and carefully and with a lot of love and care. In most cases it is a passion for that kind of work or the result of your work that motivates you and both reasons augur well for you in the career. Thee will be some initial set backs - the cash flows may not be heavy in the beginning, new places and new environments might be daunting but it will all pass. Once you are up and over that learning curve nothing can stop you. Good luck!

Looking for a new career where downsizing may NEVER exist?

The new career opportunity that I discussed with Howard Williams is one that is both physically and mentally challenging as you will learn.

You see Howard is one the leading USA "storm adjusters" and has been involved in the field for over 35 years. Recently I had a chance to sit down with Howard and discuss his years as a storm adjuster.

Hugh: "Howard, what exactly is a "storm adjuster" and what do you do?"

Howard: "When a major storm or other catastrophe hits anywhere in the country and the claims load is larger than the local adjusters can handle, the insurance companies turn to a core group of storm adjusters. These adjusters are available to respond to disasters wherever they are and whenever they are needed. Working as an extension of insurance company's claims department, adjusters assist the company's policyholders in evaluating and preparing their claims for damages."

Hugh: "I think that you have created a slogan that pretty well says it: "Going where needed, when needed."

Howard: "Yes, that is true and it has certainly been true in my case. In the past 35 years I have been to almost every natural disaster and even several man-made ones that have made the headlines in the United States. Most recently I spent six months in the Hurricane Katrina ravaged areas of Mississippi and Alabama."

Hugh: "Six months?"

Howard: "Yes, I was there in the area for six months except for coming back home several weekends. That is one of the requirements of this profession. You must be able to go any time and any where they need you. For instance, with Katrina I was on the road heading to Mississippi as soon as the roads were open for rescue trucks to get in there. I arrived there to find no motel rooms available in either Mississippi or Alabama. I finally found a condo that I was able to rent in the panhandle of Florida. Therefore I had to make that long trip daily back and forth. So you have to know how to take care of yourself and I credit a great deal of that ability to my former police training."

Hugh: "Yes, I knew that you had been a police officer in your earlier years. What other training have you found valuable?"

Howard: "As you know I'm also a personal coach and that training has been immensely valuable. For instance, in Florida, when I have worked the big hurricanes like Andrew I have found numerous senior citizens who were in a total state of shock. I would arrive at their homes to find them sitting in living rooms that had no roofs with water soaked carpets. Many had no one to turn to since their neighbors were too busy taking care of their own problems. So the first item of business is for me to get them out of that house. I want to get them into a nice clean, dry motel room if possible.

Hugh, you have to learn to EMPATHIZE with their situation and not get caught up in the drama going on. That's where my personal coach training has been invaluable. Most storm adjusters either are too business like or they get caught up in the drama happening. You want to help but you still have to focus on the situation – determining the damage done to their dwelling."

Hugh: "So what do you do to determine that damage?"

Howard: "This is where you have to use your skills of estimating and also having a background in construction certainly does not hurt. I have to begin to look at the overall situation to determine what has been damaged by water and what has been damaged by wind. As you are aware as a consumer investigative reporter, there have been numerous stories in the media regarding this with Hurricane Katrina victims. No one seems to understand that certain damages are not covered by insurance.

Estimating and surveying the damage is where it can get very interesting. You may find yourself climbing up to a roof to explore damage and the next minute find yourself crashing through that roof! It has happen to me. Also usually in areas like Mississippi you are likely to find numerous snakes beginning to take up residence in the houses. Not to mention the heat that usually returns after the storm."

Hugh: "Well with my fear of heights over 10 feet this is certainly not something that I would do well with."

Howard: "That's where a husband/wife team comes in real handy. We find a number of husband/wife teams in storm adjusting. Usually, but not always, the husband will do the climbing and the wife will write down the findings. Both need to know how to estimate and a background in construction is a plus"

Hugh: "Well, I'm sure people reading this interview will want to know: 'How much can one make in this business?'"

Howard: "This can be a very lucrative career especially if you are doing major events like Katrina. I earned in the neighborhood of $120,000 for the six months work."

Hugh: "WOW, $120,000 for six months work?

Howard: "Yes, when you learn the ropes like I will be teaching at my new school in North Carolina, it is possible to eventually be earning that amount for six months work. And both fortunately and unfortunately, this type of work will not have any downsizing in the near future."

Hugh: Yes, as you know I also own an emergency preparedness consulting business. Our reports from Max Mayfield, chief meteorologist for the National Hurricane Center, are that the powerful hurricanes like Katrina will increase in number over the next ten years."

Howard: Yes, and that is just hurricanes. Think of all the earthquakes, tornadoes, wild fires, wind storms, floods, etc. occurring in the United States every year. According to our industry association there will be a need for 1,000 new storm adjusters in 2007 alone."

Hugh: Howard, you mentioned your new school. Tell us more about it and how people reading this interview can learn more."

Howard: "Yes, I have decided to take my 35 years of experience in storm adjusting and offer a two week school for those looking for a new career. Also I will be sharing all the updated information in this field from my recent classes that I have attended. A person taking this course will learn about estimating, construction information that can make their job easier (I want to assure people that you do NOT have to have a background in construction to apply), writing the reports, communicating and working with the insurance companies, etc

Job-hopping : How It Affects Your Career Success

Is job-hopping and career success related to each other? What is the effect of one on the other? How long is too long for staying in a company? I must admit, the resumes that pass by my desk makes me conclude that job-hopping is far too common.

Job hoppers do it for various reasons. More often than not they may not know what they are getting into. Sometimes, it is because they do not know what they want and hence are not ready for the challenges that lay ahead of them. Job-hopping and career success is related to one another.

In my opinion, job-hopping affects career success in a negative manner. Consider this, what signals are you sending to your potential employer if you job-hop too often?

The Two-Year Rule
I have a two-year rule that I tell my staff and potential employees. The two-year rule is this – you must be willing to commit mentally to spend at least two years in the company before you quit. The reason is this; you need to deal with the learning curve. If you job-hop too often, you learn nothing substantial.

For me, it takes you at least a year to know the ins and outs of the company. Then another year before you can eventually be truly productive in adding value to the company. To see the true results of your contribution to the company, for me it takes at least two years. So, if you are prone to job-hopping and career success is on your mind, then it is time to rethink.

Training You
Many well-established companies have training programs. They are willing to invest in fresh graduates and newbies. However, in order for them to make that decision they need to look at past track records. Ask yourself, if you are a manager –who are you more likely to invest training time and money on?

Someone who is job-hopper and shows tendency to job-hop or someone who is stable? Companies are more likely to invest in people who are stable. The reason is simple. They are able to contribute back into the company. Everybody wins. If you are constantly job-hopping, you send a signal that you are not ready to commit.

Companies like to invest in people who see their career goals align with their corporate goals. Job-hoppers usually cannot see their career path beyond the next year.

Decreasing the Incidence of Job-Hopping
One of the best ways to quit job-hopping is to truly know what you want. Once you know that, you will have singular focus in the pursuit of your career goals. Of course, it is understandable that as a fresh graduate or newbie at work it is tough to know that. You may be interested in some other industries.

If there are other fields that you are interested in then make a plan to find out about them. Start with the Internet, and then ask friends who may know people in those fields. Speak to them; ask them about the expectations of the company and the role of the position you are interested in.

You may not have all the answers but at least you get some idea. That would decrease the chances of you job-hopping.

Make Learning a Key Objective
If you are new in the work force and have been job-hopping quite a bit, my advice to you is this - truly find out what you want. Once you know that, find a company that is willing to train or how they are willing to commit to their employees’ career in the long term. If they have structured training programs, join them.

Make learning the relevant skills and knowledge in that industry your key objective. The skills and knowledge that you learn will contribute to your career success in the long term. It is something that you can bring with you the rest of your life. Once you see the benefits of committing to a company who is willing to train you for more than two years, hopefully you won’t be job-hopping often anymore.
