Giveaway Recruiters - Your Next Job at Home?

However most people don't know what these opportunities are actually about and jump in head first without actually knowing what they're getting involved in. Giveaway recruiters are people who offer trials of products and services to customers. This is a form of internet marketing in which advertisers earn commissions for referring customers to new products. The internet has made this type of work beyond easy since all you need is an internet connection and a website to start a business that really has unlimited potential.

The real trick to becoming a successful internet marketer and ultimately a good giveaway recruiter is to understand how to generate online traffic. If you are planning for your next job at home to be in this industry then this is a must have skill. The backbone of internet commerce rests on internet traffic. Now there are several ways to drive traffic to your website or the current giveaway that you are participating in. The first is to advertise; if you have a budget you can take out ads on Google and other major search engines. This is a very effective method with the only drawback being that you need to have start-up cash.

The other method that many giveaway recruiters use is to get people to their websites or blogs through good content. This involves writing entertaining posts that people want to read. They have to be related to the product that you are trying to advertise and give people some kind of incentive to keep reading your blog and to also try out the product that you are promoting. If this is going to be your next job at home then you need to learn and understand these strategies of marketing and advertising that the top giveaway recruiters are using to earn a living. The final step in becoming successful at this is to really know what kind of products you are dealing with.

You don't want to stake your business reputation on some trial offer that is for a horrible product with bad customer service. You want to be sure to check out any product that you are promoting before you begin to run any kind of promotions for it. Many inexperienced giveaway recruiters ruin their entire careers by aligning themselves with the wrong companies and products. This is an important lesson to learn especially if you want this to be your next job at home. You don't want to shoot yourself in the foot before you even get started playing in the big leagues.

Discrimination Against Women at Job Interviews and How You Can Prevent It

There is still discrimination against women in the workplace despite all the employment laws covering sexual discrimination. One of the places this discrimination occurs is in job interviews where employers are concerned that a woman applicant may want time off work on maternity leave or to look after dependents. So what can a woman do to prevent being discriminated against in job interviews.

I've been a sales manager for several companies, both large and small, and part of my role has been staff recruitment and interviewing job applicants. Although many laws have been passed to stop discrimination against women in the workplace there are still barriers to overcome in job interviews. An interviewer may not openly show sexual discrimination but there may be reasons they prefer a male job candidate to a female applicant.

A small business owner could be worried about women taking time off for maternity leave. This may not be a direct financial concern about paying women while on maternity leave, it's more probably about the cost of replacing and training someone to cover their role while they are off. I know in many roles it just isn't worth the expense of taking on a temporary replacement as it can take too long to train them up to an effective standard. Another concern for employers is whether the woman comes back to work after the baby is born or decides to become a full time Mother.

Larger businesses worry about recruiting women in the workplace as even in today's liberated society it is often the woman that takes time off if children or other dependents need caring for. This can lead to job discrimination against women as the employer may want to keep a certain balance of male and female employees to maintain staffing levels. This sexual discrimination means the best candidate doesn't always get the job if it's a woman.

In sales, which is the area I work in, many sales managers will want only a small percentage of their team made up of young women. This is because they still have to carry the sales target even when the team member is on maternity leave or looking after dependents. While employment laws to stop discrimination against the employee have been put in place, what about the poor sales managers that miss their targets.

So what can a woman do in a job interview to stop an employer discriminating against her. As a working sales manager I have seen many interviewers assume that any woman of child bearing age is either going to have children in the near future, or already has them and will need time off for parental care. The interviewer's view of the future may be a totally different to the plans of the job candidate. But because of employment laws on sexual discrimination they are not allowed to ask questions that would give them a clear picture of the situation.

One action a woman can take to prevent job interview discrimination is to openly discuss the topic and show she is aware of possible concerns. As an interviewer I would find this positively refreshing. It would show the applicant has her life planned out, knows that this is important to an employer, and is willing to confront these possible reasons for discrimination against women. If a woman has dependants then by telling the interviewer how she balances home and work, and what happens when care is needed, she is stopping the interviewer from making their own conclusions.

Is it right that a woman should face sexual discrimination because she is the one that gives birth? No it isn't. Should an employer automatically assume that it will be the woman that takes time off when the children are ill? No they shouldn't. But let's not pretend that the employment laws on sexual discrimination will stop an interviewer, male or female, from worrying about these issues and possibly employing a male candidate because they think a woman may be taking time off work in the future. If you have actions in place for child care, or know what your future family plans are, then be honest and open with an interviewer and stop their assumptions from stopping you getting the job you want.

Best Paying Careers For Women

When it comes to careers for women, it was normally stability that was given precedence over salary. Over the last decade, with better education and opportunities, women have started coming out of the preoccupation of family carer and home management and instead are choosing more high paying jobs that don't provide the previous stability yet give them the satisfaction of both career and a higher income.

What are those high paying jobs?

There has been a gradual shift from the traditional careers for women like nurse, dental assistant, etc to non-traditional and alternative posts like general practitioners, dentists, etc. This is a welcome change for women and society in general. When we talk about the best paying careers for women today, we easily notice that the field of medicine is dominating the charts.

o The latest to add in this category is the job of anaesthesiologists. They are the ones who give anaesthesia to patients pre-surgery to render them unconscious during the surgery. This involves proper understanding of the patient's body and the various risks it faces when a particular anaesthetic is given. This is one of the top paying jobs in the market today.

o The role of an internist often goes unnoticed by most of us. They are the ones who provide non-surgical treatment to the internal organs of the patients when they are inflicted with disease. This is a wonderful profession and internists are renowned for taking home healthy salaries every month.

o One field of medicine has almost always been held by women and why not! It is the post of a gynaecologist. A gynaecologist is a special stream of doctors who handle the diseases related to the reproductive organs of women and childbirth. This is a very important job and women have played a massively important role. No wonder such an important job is paid so well.

o It is time women stopped limiting themselves to dental assistants and instead become a dentist. Apart from dentists being one of the best paid people in the industry, like medical doctors they hold highly respected, responsible positions in society.

o If you try to step aside from the field of medicine and consider other alternatives, you will find there are other equally fulfilling jobs for women. A teacher is one of them. Being a teacher has been a rewarding career for many women both in terms of satisfaction and income (in most locations). In fact, the constant contact with bright minds can be very enriching just on its own.

o Human resources in larger firms is another attractive field where women dominate and earn a good pay package. The human resources department of a company handle the employee welfare, recruitment, social activities, etc. In short, it handles everything that concerns the 'people' side of the company.

o The Fashion industry has always attracted women. But apart from being just a skinny model gracing the ramp, women can also hold many other posts that are equally or much more rewarding. Fashion designers, make-up artists, event managers, etc. have amazing take home salaries that can turn a top model turn green with envy!

o The post of financial advisor may be quite a risky job as it involves giving advice on the financial matters of people, but it is a high paying job precisely for that. Women who are good in finance and are comfortable giving advice can have the experience of their lifetime in this career as it is a highly interesting job. People are known to earn enormous amounts once they become established in this field.

The list given above is only indicative. There are many fields like sales, psychiatry, analysis etc. that are also rewarding.

Wow! So how do I get one?

Well, no matter what job you want, they almost always involve some basic qualifications. Traditional jobs which women used to hold required little educational requirements in many cases. However, all the high paying jobs usually require proper, formal education as they are most often more complex. Most require degree qualifications and in the case of a career in medicine, it's usually a tough five to six years medical degree plus some internship.

Education may seem costly sometimes and you may be tempted to slip back and settle for a low paying job. However, that decision of yours can help you lose a lifetime of comfort and satisfaction. There are scores of educational loans that are being offered to students. You can always pay it back over time after you get those dream jobs.

Finally, some research is all it takes and you can even jump on line at your local library (usually for free) if you don't have a computer of your own yet!

Traditionally a male dominated industry, jobs on oil rigs are becoming increasingly popular with women looking to further their chosen career or just keen to get a job offshore that offers amazing pay and some pretty impressive holiday benefits.

There is no doubt that rigs are difficult places to work whatever your sex. Extreme conditions and dangerous, difficult, physically demanding jobs make life on the rigs a challenge. Despite their increasing popularity, women are still a minority in where jobs on oil rigs are concerned. A rig of 200 might expect to see 3-5 women crew members.

What jobs are suitable?

Well, the simple answer is that depends on your physique. If you're used to lifting 100kg blocks all day, fine with heights, willing to put your fingers (and your life) at risk everyday then every job is suitable. However, if that's not you, firecrews and first aiders are an excellent jobs on oil rigs for women.

Fashion Career Specializations - A Breakdown

Coming straight from fashion school, you might be thinking that as a fashion designer; you'll have the opportunity to work with all types of clothing. What you may not know is that generally, the fashion industry is split into categories, and then categories within categories. Basically, the fashion industry is very specialized. The breakdown begins with price (which usually corresponds with quality). The lowest classification is Discount, and at the height of fashion is Haute Couture:

* Discount: These stores sell merchandise that retails at a discounted price from what other stores charge. Outlet malls or stores like Ross, Wal-Mart, Target, or Conway are example of discount retailers that sell discount labels.
* Budget / Mass Market: Knock-offs of higher priced designer items that are sold at low competitive prices to the masses. Old Navy, Forever 21, and Charlotte Russe are a few popular budget labels. Department stores in this category include JC Penney, and Kohls. This market usually retails for less than $100.
* Moderate: These include nationally advertised apparel brands such as Nine West, Gap, Abercrombie & Fitch, Express, and Zara are all in the moderate range. Examples of moderate department stores are Macy's and Dillards. These brands typically retail for less than $300.
* Contemporary: More than just a specific price point, this classification is a fashion-forward image often aimed at women in their '20s and early '30s looking for trendy fashions priced more affordably than Designer pieces. BCBG, Betsey Johnson, Bebe, and Rebecca Taylor fall into the Contemporary category, which usually retails for under $500.
* Better: Also selling for less than $500, these collections use better quality fabric and styling than lower-priced brands. Armani Exchange, Jones New York and Anne Klein are two examples of a better-priced line.
* Bridge: Priced under $1000, these lines serve as a "bridge" between better and designer categories. And includes names like Ellen Tracy, Dana Buchman, DKNY, Emporio Armani, and Lauren by Ralph Lauren.
* Designer: True designer collections typically sell for more than $1000 per item. The fabrics, fit, details, and trims are superior to other ready-to-wear items. Some examples of designer labels are Gucci, Prada, Versace, Armani, and Chanel.
* Haute Couture/ Avant-garde: Also know as couture, these terms have been commonly misused by ready-to-wear brands. Haute Couture, or simply "couture" designers sell custom, made-to-measure pieces cost tens of thousands of dollars and are affordable only to a select few. Technically speaking, there are only ten official Haute Couture Houses including: Christian Dior, Jean Paul Gaultier, Chanel, and Givenchy. Avant-garde designers produce high quality, one-of-a-kind garments that experiment with new design concepts and push the envelope of popular fashion.

Even within the categories listed above, each market is broken down into more specific specializations. First, design companies are broken down by customer: men's, women's, children's etc. Then are further divided by type of clothing: sportswear, evening wear (special occasion), sleepwear etc. And then design teams are designated to specific areas like Wovens, Knits, Sweaters, Tops, Bottoms, Dresses, Outerwear and so on.

On an unfortunate note, it is very difficult to move from one category to another. If you start building your career with mass-market companies, you'll face some barriers when you apply for that dream job at Ralph Lauren. The same goes for designer specialties. If you're experienced working with children's woven tops, chances are you won't land a position designing women's dresses. If you're absolutely determined on making a switch, you're best bet is to start from the bottom in your desired field and work your way up again.

Something else to consider is the different types of manufacturers and retailers out there. Some manufacturers design and produce their own designs, which are then sold to retailers. These manufacturers don't have their own retail stores. Examples include Shoshanna, Jones New York and Carmen Marc Valvo. There are also manufacturers that own licenses for a variety of brands. For example, Warnaco holds licenses for Calvin Klein, Speedo, and Chaps; while Phillips Van Heusen (PVH) owns licenses for BCBG, Sean Jean, and Kenneth Cole.

Then, there are retailers that only sell merchandise purchased from manufacturers. These include stores like Bloomingdales and Neiman Marcus. Many manufacturers also have their own retail locations such as Polo Ralph Lauren, Armani Exchange and Nicole Miller. Other retail stores have their own product development teams and have merchandise manufactured specifically for their private label such as Gap, Old Navy, and Express. In addition to purchasing merchandise from outside manufacturers, many department stores also have their own private label collections. Examples are: I.N.C. (Macy's), and Arizona Jeans (JC Penney).

The largest employment opportunities out there lie with mass-market companies, which often pay pretty well to start, however these figures usually level-off after a few years of experience. The higher end markets pay less to start, and work hours are longer, but the prestige you'll receive from such reputable companies will do wonders for your resume!

Best Paying Careers For Women - 3 Great Jobs That Pay the Big Bucks

In general, the best paying careers for women are the best paying careers for men, with exceptions like professional male athletes in the NFL, NBA, and Major League Baseball. Women make up half the workforce, and in many cases they are the primary wage earners in their families, so it's especially important that women maximize their earning power.

Men still out-earn women by about 20%, but the wage gap in the US finally appears to be closing. In fact, according to the US Department of Labor, just over 50% of workers in management and professional jobs are women.

When it comes to the top paying careers for women, one thing becomes clear: education is the key to most of the highest earning categories, particularly education in mathematics and the so-called hard sciences like chemistry, biology, and physics.

As is the case with men, the top paying jobs for women are those as chief executives. As of 2009, women made up around one-quarter of chief executives, and only earned three-quarters of what their male counterparts earned. Still, with a median income of $81,000 per year, being a chief executive pays well, regardless of gender.

Also high on the list of best paying careers for women is a career in pharmacy. Pharmacists out-earn lawyers and physicians. The median salary for female pharmacists is over $75,000 per year, and it is a field that is poised for continued growth as the population ages.

One of the reasons that pharmacists out-earn physicians on average has to do with how broad the definitions are. The category of physician takes in not only top earning surgeons, but also residents and interns, who earn very little. Another reason that women pharmacists out-earn women physicians on average is that women physicians are more likely to specialize in lower paying physician specialties like family medicine rather than the high paying specialties like plastic surgery and cardiac surgery.

Computer programming is another great career for women. While women make up less than one-quarter of computer programmers, their earnings are nearly identical to those of men in the field, with a median of $62,000 per year. Programmers in the top 10% of their profession pull in over $100,000 a year. This is also a great profession due to its natural compatibility with telecommuting. Computer programmers often start out with bachelors degrees, so they start earning good money much sooner in their careers than women in careers that require years of training, such as medicine.

Occupational therapy is a high earning profession that is dominated by women, who make up more than 80% of the professionals in the sector. Female occupational therapists match males in salary, too, the only professional sector in which that is uniformly true. Occupational therapists earn a median income of $60,000 per year, and the field is expected to experience healthy growth through 2020. However, there are several more opportunities to read about.

How to Succeed As a Bodyguard

Even though some countries and cities may report a decline in the level of crime dogging their jurisdiction, the truth is that crime is a reality that society and individuals must find ways to deal with. When it comes to personal protection, different persons have different needs depending on a number of factors such as status in society. This is where the role of bodyguards, also known as executive protection specialists, comes in. Indeed, the need for bodyguards has seen a rapid increase in line with the growing threat to personal safety presented by terrorism, crime and unpredictable stalkers.

In addition, prominent persons such as politicians, business persons, top level corporate executives and celebrities rely on the services of bodyguards to help them avoid pesky paparazzi and ensure they enjoy their privacy. Due to their high risk work environment and the high demand for their services, bodyguards are relatively well compensated.

But being an executive protection specialist takes hard work and dedication if one is to effectively execute their role. Bodyguards must be physically fit and in near perfect health. This will provide a good foundation for them to protect their client. Looking at the circle of persons their clients will frequently be in contact with, a specialist must also have great oral and written communication skills.

Moreover, bodyguards will come across different types of people during the course of duty and they must have good interpersonal skills while taking care not to compromise their client's safety. Today's bodyguards must make use of both brain and brawn. Apart from physically confronting and repelling threats against their client, bodyguards will sometimes be called upon to negotiate with the aggressor in order to avoid the threat from materializing into injury or fatality.

Bodyguards should also be observant and highly aware of their surroundings. In fact, a bodyguard must, where possible take the initiative of familiarizing themselves with an area prior to their client's arrival. This will help them to better make practical evacuation plans as well as take appropriate action when confronted with danger. For instance, they will be better positioned to identify which is the quickest escape route depending on what area of the compound or building the client is located at the time.

A bodyguard must be prepared to spend a lot of their time in solitude. The role of the bodyguard will often not require them to be in constant communication with their employer or the people around. Many times, a bodyguard will have to sit alone in a car or a room.

The modern day executive protection specialist must be prepared to apply for and attend certificate programs that will equip him or her with the required skills. The certificate programs usually run for a few months. One can go further and pursue a bachelors degree or an associate degree in law enforcement and criminal justice. Associate degrees take 2 years while the bachelor's degree goes for 4 years.

This is a great career for the right individual. If this is you, then by all means do more research on it. You can start by visiting websites that go into more detail on the bodyguard career.

Job Interviews: How to Answer "Problem" Questions

One of the most common job interview questions is, "What is the toughest problem you've had to face, and how did you overcome it?" Here's how to give a winning answer.

First, realize that this popular interview question provides you with an excellent opportunity to shine. Everyone wants to hire people who are good at solving problems. Think of a good example concerning a problem that faced your company and not just you personally. The bigger the problem, the better.

Give specific examples of the skills and techniques you used to resolve this problem. Emphasize the successful results.

Be generous in sharing credit if it was a team effort, but be sure to highlight your specific role.

Sample Answer:

"When I assumed the role of Chief Dog Groomer at Mutts R Us, team morale was low, sales were lackluster and customers were dissatisfied. I immediately took action to identify the specific problems, analyze alternative solutions and pick the best options, and set a timeline for implementing the corrective actions. I reorganized the team structure and established written goals that focused on teamwork, improved customer service and increased productivity. One specific example is that I implemented a 'satisfaction guarantee' for quality and timeliness with each grooming service, and tied in performance-based rewards for employees. These actions greatly improved morale and increased our sales by 48% in the first three months."

Here's another interview question that is very similar...

"Describe a situation where you used your own initiative to solve a problem."

It's unlikely that you'll be asked both, but have two different problem-solving examples ready just in case, with one emphasizing initiative.

Sample Answer:

"I once received a last-minute request from the General Manager to prepare a letter to residents of a neighborhood that was undergoing emergency sewer repairs by our agency. My boss was on vacation, but she had asked that I attend an off-site meeting that same afternoon. There was no way I would be able to get the letter done and also attend the meeting. I decided, of course, that the General Manager's request took priority. But the off-site meeting was on a very important topic and I knew my boss was relying on me to attend. So I immediately called the chairperson of that meeting and made arrangements to participate via speakerphone. By eliminating the 45-minute travel time, I was able to complete the GM's letter and still participate in the off-site meeting."

Preparing for these types of questions in advance is very important. It'll get you thinking about your specific accomplishments. Even if these particular questions are not asked, you'll probably be able to use versions of your prepared answers in response to other questions.

For any job interview: anticipate likely questions, prepare answers that are specific (and as relevant to the position as possible), and practice, practice, practice!

10 Popular Interview Questions - What's the Hidden Meaning?

Interview Preparation is essential if you want to be offered the job but many organisations start an interview with popular interview questions which seem easy to answer. However some of the most innocent popular interview questions can get a candidate to relax and 'open up' revealing personal information about themselves which they should not have shared. In an interview there's no such thing as an innocent interview question even if you're asked it by an assistant on the way to or from the interview room! Depending on the organisation, the ten popular interview questionsbelow might be asked in a slightly different way but the motivation behind the questions is the same. Interview preparation will ensure that you always have a good interview answer to hand.

Q1. What have you been up to since you left your job?

Saying, 'I've had a chance to catch up on all the chores to do around the house' is not a good interview answer. An organisation wants to employ people who are energetic, self-motivated, and determined. The longer you have been out of work the more important it is for you to show that you have managed your time well. This might mean volunteering for work where you can use your skills and abilities, attending courses so that you upgrade your skills, and being active in a business or professional network.

Q2. How long have you been looking for a job?

Unfortunately it is true that the longer you are out of work the more difficult it is to be offered a job and you lose interview self-confidence. With this popular interview question the potential employer wants to know whether there something wrong with the candidate that has been out of work for a long time. When there's a chance that you might be 'out of work' for a considerable time it is important to give yourself a deadline and then consider taking a job which might be a contract position, or a job in another area of the country. Even consider a job where you're over qualified. All jobs at every level can be used to promote a candidate so don't feel that taking a job below your qualifications means that this will be held against you in the future. Being seen as a pragmatist and a hard worker will help you to stand out against the competition for a job.

Q3. Why do you want this job?

This is a very popular interview question but saying, 'because you saw the advert is not a good interview answer', even if it's true. It's a buyers market and a potential employer wants to employ a person who is keen and enthusiastic to work with them. If they find a candidate who's genuinely interested in their company then they believe that they're more likely to stay and succeed in the new job. The candidate who prepares for the interview by reading up on the organization and demonstrates an understanding of their strategy, management team and current issues is more likely to capture the interest of the interviewer. Find something specific about the company that complements your own experience and ambitions. It is even more impressive if you've 'gone out of your way' to understand the organization such as talking to other employees or their customers. To interview brilliantly check out these 27 Interview Tips.

Q4. What do you consider to be you greatest achievement?

In an interview, candidates tend to smile and nod a lot. The potential employer is interested in getting to know the 'real' you and whether you're going to fit within the culture and role of their organisation. Asking about your achievements is a popular interview question. The achievement you choose to talk about says a great deal about you and your personality. A good interview answer is to choose an accomplishment that relate to the position you're applying for. If this isn't obvious pick an accomplishment that required some of the same strengths that will be needed for the job. If you're applying for a leadership position in a task goal orientated culture then the interviewer is going to be impressed by someone who is motivated by achieving a project or goal and inspires others around them. In an entrepreneurial organisation a 'creative mind' will be more appreciated. The ability to 'think on one's feet' will be considered critical to a high level of success within their organisation.

Q5. What salary did you earn in your last job?

Companies will frequently find different ways to ask an interview question to determine the candidate's salary requirements. Your last salary is a good way for them to determine whether they can afford you. If the salary the organisation is offering is considerably lower than your previous salary they'll have concerns over whether you will stay in the job. If this is the case, then a good interview answer is to convince them that you are prepared to live on a lower salary and why. Sometimes, companies will ask the candidates, 'what salary do you require? If this is too high for their budget they will look at other applicants. A good interview answer is to say that you are willing to start on a lower salary with bonuses driven by targets. This gives them savings on their budget and a safety net if the candidate does not achieve as well as expected.

Q6. What do you think is your weakness?

One of the most important tasks of the interviewer is to find a candidate who they would like to work with and who is likely to get on with other people in their organisation. Candidates often try to answer this popular interview question with a positive trait disguised as a weakness. For example, 'I'm a bit of a perfectionist' or 'I tend to work too hard and expect others to do the same'. An interviewer is looking for someone who has a level of maturity and self-awareness as this is an important trait for creating empathy and working with people. To stand out from other candidates a good interview answer is to mention a genuine weakness, and then emphasize what you've done to overcome or manage your weakness. This is evidence of a truly confident person who takes personal responsibility for themselves.

Q7. Give me an example of when you found working with someone difficult?

By asking this popular interview question, the interviewer is acknowledging that we can all have a problem working with people some of the time. This is a popular question for revealing any prejudices that the candidate might have. Today it is essential that an interviewer employs a candidate who is comfortable working with people from a diverse range of ethnic, cultural, ages and religious backgrounds. A good interview answer would be to mention a specific person who you found difficult to work with rather than a group of people. Give a specific example such as a person resisting change on one project. Importantly, demonstrate the difficulty and how you resolved the issue.

Q8. What will you be doing in five years time?

Ambition and drive are great qualities in a candidate as it demonstrates energy to persevere and reach goals even in tough times. However, an organisation also wants to see signs of stability and loyalty to employers. If your CV shows that you've moved every eighteen months or so the interviewer is likely to need reassuring that you're not going to 'jump ship' to a competitor in a year from now. A good interview answer is to talk about the opportunities you've researched within their organisation and your ambitions to excel within it, particularly if you can refer to employees within their organisation. Setting Clear Objectives before you go for an interview is useful otherwise you can waste time applying for jobs you're unlikely to get.

Q9. Why are you the best person for the job?

As with answering all the other popular interview questions try and appear confident and likable. A poor interview answer is to just say that you're better than any of the other candidates. You don't know the qualifications or experience of the other candidates! A good interview answer is to focus on three to five specific reasons why you should be hired and briefly substantiate your claims. Remember, to tell the interviewer that you're really enthusiastic about being offered this job and determined to demonstrate the contribution and value you can make to their company. Knowing how to sell yourself is an interview is very great interview skill.

Q10. Is there anything you want me to ask you?

Many firms now ask a similar open ended question. This is not a trick question but just gives the candidate a chance to speak on their own behalf. If you think that there have been any problems in the interview, this is your chance to go back into an area which you think the interviewer may have doubt about you. It is not a good interview answer to say, 'no' as this can show that you're not interested in the job. It can also give you a chance to reiterate a strength which you think is important and might distinguish you from other candidates.

If You Do Not Like Your Career Search Results - Remember YOU Can Change it!

"I'm lucky to be alive." That was told to me by my ex-husband the other day. Let me explain a few things about my ex-husband- first, we are friends. Honest to goodness friends. We have a son together and we are both actively raising him - together. We communicate daily; we listen to each other's ideas and agree on courses of action for our son. The divorce did not start out that way, but the cancer changed all that. Cancer. That's my second thing to explain. He is a cancer survivor - advanced, aggressive, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. The doctors thought it developed within a months time and was so aggressive they used experimental treatment, so unknown as to what they were doing they literally told me if the cancer did not kill him the chemo would. He had less than a 10% chance of survival. He beat it, no he kicked its ass. Excuse my language, but I think it appropriate in this instance. But it took its toll, he has neuropathy in his feet, numerous surgeries and treatments and the poor man lives in pain every day. Both his ankles are fused to his leg bones so he has no real flexibility and he said it is like his feet are on fire or walking on glass 24/7. This man has an incredible pain threshold so if he says he hurts anyone else would have cut their own limb off. But he goes to work everyday, spends time with his son and is appreciative to be alive. Lastly, he is a black and white kind of guy, not sniff the roses kind of guy. Very old fashioned, things should be a certain way, no ifs ands or buts. So for him to say he is lucky to be alive it is a huge statement and reflection. Even though he cheated death at just 41.

He called me yesterday to tell me his first oncologist, Dr. Hwang, died earlier this month. They were the same age. Dr. Hwang would have been 49 next Thursday. Dr. Hwang was a wonderful doctor and man. He was patient with us and supportive when my ex was first diagnosed. I am truly sorry for his family; they have lost a great man. Here was a man that fights to save people from this terrible disease and he is outlived by one of his patients. Reflect on that for a moment.

I normally give advice on resumes, interviewing and personal business presentation. Today, with learning of the passing of Dr. Hwang I felt compelled to post a blog as a gentle reminder to myself and others that we are lucky to be alive. Our lives may not be playing out like we would like them to, we may not have a great job or a job at all, we may not have a significant other, we may not have a lot of things - but honestly do we look every day to see what we do have?

Eight years ago when my ex-husband was going through treatment and I was there every night and every weekend it would have been easy to complain of everything that was going wrong. I was rebuilding a relationship with the man whom I divorced a year prior, I was working full time, I was a full time mom, I had no significant other and financially it was difficult. I did not focus on these things. My focus was that the father of my child was going to survive to continue to be a father to his son, I had a great job that I loved and was able to go to every day, I had a beautiful son who was involved in his dad's treatment and an incredible child, I chose to focus my attention on my family rather than find a relationship, and I could pay my bills (maybe a little late) but I could put food on the table for my son and a roof over his head.

By focusing on the positives it helped us all get through that terrible time. My son and his father have a good relationship, I own my own business and after 20 plus years the love of my life is back in my life and we will be getting married in the near future.

In learning of Dr. Hwang's passing, it gave me a kick in the hind quarters. Everything that I had complained about yesterday ticked me off. That I was complaining rather than acting. I had to get myself back on the track of what can I change today to make it better - what choices can I make to eliminated the complaints I had earlier.

Here's the thing - if I wanted to be preachy I could at this point tell you to write down all your blessings, take time out of every day to reflect on the positives, see the good in all people and generally hug yourself. But, really, that is not me. If you know me or have read any of my earlier postings you know that I pretty much say it as I see it and can be blunt.

So what I would really like to say is this - let's get over ourselves. Yes, there are things in our life that stink, we all have that. But, which of those things can you change? Be honest here, you can not blame all the ills of the world on others. Take some action and take back the positives in your life. Don't have a job and feel like you are sending out hundreds of resumes? Have someone look at your resume. If you do not want to hire someone for it, have a friend look at it with you, someone who will be honest with you. My client's pay me to do their resumes but it is more than that, I am honest with them. I do not always tell them things they like but they know I will be honest and work with them to make it their best. I work with them. Go to the library, they have lots of reference materials. Do something to make a positive change.

Have friends that feed your negativity? You get together and have complaint parties? Stay away from them! I have enough stuff I need to focus on, I do not need to take on their complaints and negative energies! Kids acting up and wont listen to you? Get them where it hurts, take away their privileges and make them earn them back. Do not be afraid to be the bad guy - my goodness that is part of our job as parents. Yes, it is harder to hear them whine about not having their phone, but too bad. If my son whines, it just adds to the chores list of time it takes to get it back. Eventually he learns.

With everything, you cannot always control the situation, but you can control how you react to it. That is your choice. Take control, take action and be glad you have the opportunities to do so! I will leave you with my favorite saying: Some pursue happiness, others create it.

Three Lies That Restrict Your Career Freedom

The truth is that you'd rather enjoy the freedom, prosperity and fulfillment of self-employment. Who wouldn't? Yet you will not make your move if you keep telling these lies to yourself.

Read these lies and then instead ask if you are willing to begin telling the raw truth to yourself about your self-employment prospects.

Lie #1. I can't choose just one idea.

People who say they have too many ideas and interests end up using this as an excuse to never take action. We all have multiple interests. Your multiple interests are not what make you special.

Having many ideas or too many ideas. Is it really a problem? It's only a problem if you hide behind the multiple ideas and use it as an excuse to feed your resistance.

What makes you special is your unique core makeup combined with your distinct life experience. This combination is right now dictating your one true calling. When you build a business around that one true calling you will succeed.

Among your many ideas one is close to your calling. But until you choose one horse and ride it no further wisdom will appear. It's wise to ride one horse of an idea until it reaches a point of stability.

At that point of stable flow and profitability you'll see the next best idea and the next.

The corridor theory will save you. But you can't see your best opportunity until you get off you ass and walk down the hall.

Lie #2. I don't have what it takes.

Really how do you know? Where's your proof? Before you answer, know this; valid proof only appears on the other side of action. Just thinking about anything and coming up short is not proof.

Who you are is not stopping you; it's your doubt of you that's stopping you.

Don't doubt your capacity. Imagine how your life might have turned out differently if you had never doubted yourself. You are unique and you came here equipped to do something special. There is no other explanation that serves both you and humanity.

When you doubt yourself you stay stuck in the no win regions of your mind. You keep thinking and looking for evidence that you're right. Your life becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy of doom and gloom.

Success is never a question of capacity but often a question of willingness. Be willing to take the next obvious step and then the next and your doubt will fade.

Lie #3. I don't want to make the wrong choice.

Really? What's so bad about making the wrong choice? Has that ever killed you? I'm betting that choosing wrong has been among your best moves in the wisdom of hindsight.

If you choose and take action some good will come. You really can't miss by all that much. Every experience presents itself for you to choose an action that either takes you closer to or further away from your calling.

The only possible wrong choice is standing pat and not choosing.

You can't get this wrong. Action clarifies.

If you feel ready to quit telling these lies or others to yourself hire a career coach who will encourage you while holding you accountable.

You can feel really confident about doing your own thing. You do have what it takes and you don't have to wait for any condition to be right to make your move.

How to Be a Good Worker and Still Leave at 5PM Everyday

Most people want to prove to their boss that they are efficient and effective workers, especially if there is opportunity to be promoted. There is a common misconception that hours and hours of overtime and staying after work is the only way to show a boss or manager that you are a dedicated employee. This is simply not so. Let's look at a few strategies that you can use to impress your employer while still leaving at the time you are supposed to be off every day.

1.Email Can Be a Huge Distraction. If you are fortunate enough to have your own computer during the work day you must be disciplined. A computer, especially one with internet and e-mail access, is one of the most common distractions seen in the workplace today. Start disciplining yourself with your e-mail. A sudden e-mail from a long last friend can derail anyone from a productive roll at work. Make sure you work e-mail and personal e-mail are two separate accounts. You don't even want to give yourself the opportunity to be easily distracted by personal e-mail.

2.Start Big. For some odd reason it seems that human nature convinces us to leave large projects or difficult tasks for "later". This is one way to find yourself behind and unmotivated. Who wants to tackle a large project at 3 p.m. when all you can think about is going home and putting on comfortable clothes? Avoid this dilemma by knocking out all of the difficult or large tasks in the morning hour. Once completed, you will tend to have a feeling of accomplishment and this often motivates people even more.

3.Multi-tasking May Be Less Efficient. Today's society promotes multi-tasking by the products and programs on the market. Every day there are new gadgets being released that allow people to complete multiple tasks at one time. While this may be effective with tasks at home, multi-tasking can actually cause you to be less productive in the workplace. Workers often try to start five different projects, or tasks, at one time. This causes most people to be unfocused. Constantly moving from project to project will cause you to think unclearly about all of them. At the end of the day you will feel that you have accomplished nothing other than having multiple projects started with no results.

Keep these strategies in mind next time you are staying after work in hopes to impress your boss. Employers are more impressed with those employees that are more efficient within a shorter amount of time. Think as your eight hours of work as your time to shine. Get in there and knock out your big tasks without being distracted by things from your personal life. Implementing these strategies into your work week will surely produce impressive results.

2 Ways Online Web Conferencing Can Save Your Business Money

Like the telephone before it, the Internet has proven to be an invaluable tool in the workplace. Getting information online is easier then ever and as more companies continue to rely upon the Internet to conduct business, various services based on its technology have begun taking businesses in directions they didn't realize where possible. One of these technologies is online web conferencing. Online web conferencing combines the strengths of the Internet's ability to pass along massive amounts of information with the assurance one feels with face-to-face communication. Here are 2 ways that online web conferencing can serve your company.

Video - It's like being in the same room

Online web conferencing offer its users the unique ability to be able to communicate in a group setting despite being separated by a few buildings or hundreds of miles. Unlike a videophone call, web conferencing can allow multiple participants to view each other via web cameras. This allows for more interaction between multiple parties. This interaction allows for the free exchange of ideas, freeing you from the need to stick with pre-determined agendas. The free exchange of ideas is what makes online web conferencing the conferencing of choice for many companies. Several sales driven companies have found that being able to answer the questions of their clients face to face no matter where their location to be a powerful tactic.

A cheap cost saving solution

As gas prices continue to rise with no relief in sight, it is important that companies look for ways to limit expenses. Web conferencing has proven to be a great solution for many companies. Aside from saving in transit times, the cost of sending representatives to various locations can really serve to encroach upon budgets. Not only that but for many companies they find that people are better prepared for a conference that is held at their desk as opposed to in another location. So it can work on a company wide scale as well. Keeping things cheap is what puts companies ahead and can make the difference between a good quarter and a great quarter.

A little patience and persistence will go a long way in helping one to pocket a decent sum at the end of every month.

Managing Your Time Effectively While Working

Being able to manage your time effectively is one of the greatest assets as a work at home professional. Most telecommuters are able to create their own schedules, however adhering to that schedule can often prove to be quite a daunting task. The things that we need most as a telecommuter are just the things that tend to hold us back the most.
One of the most important tools that we have as telecommuters is email. Although necessary, it is often a distraction. Create an email that you use strictly for work, aside from the email address that everyone else in your virtual world has. While we love the money angels and funny jokes we get daily, work is not the place to read them.

While the telephone is a necessity for any home office, it can also be a hindrance to schedule adherence. Turn the ringer off during work hours or divert personal calls to voicemail unless there is an emergency. Most of us have friends or family that figure since we work at home we can stop and gossip at any time. Sure, we could, but again that keeps us from staying on task.

The Internet is not always your friend. Yes, we need the Internet for work but we should not be surfing during work time. Countless hours are wasted on games, chat and other distractions on the Internet. Work time is not the time for Facebook, Twitter, MySpace or any of the other places we love to frequent virtually.

Television can also be the nemesis of a productive day. With the great variety of talk shows and court shows available during day time television, while quite entertaining, again can be quite the distraction. Instead, integrate television time into your day. Schedule an hour to watch your favorite show as an incentive to get some things marked off you're your to do list.

Make a reasonable schedule and stick to it. It is not reasonable to expect to sit in one spot doing nothing but work for eight to ten hours straight through. If you are able to, schedule a fifteen minute break every couple of hours to take a brisk walk around the block to get rid of some of that pent up energy. Think of the things that you love to do, whether it's watching television, taking a nap or reading a book and use that as a reward for a job well done midway through your day. Manage your time wisely and don't forget to relax while working at home

How You Can Start a Legitimate Work From Home Business

The surest way that you will find a legitimate work from home business is to start something for yourself. You can build a business from scratch that is all yours. Granted it may be easier to sign on with a business you have seen advertised as legitimate. However there is a lot to be said for freedom and independence.

While the programs you have seen may be legitimate, they may not be profitable, or there may be other issues that may impede your progress, such as lack of support or a glut of already existing businesses in that niche. Even a bad reputation in an industry such as 'MLM' can make it an uphill battle for you. This may be unfair and untrue, none the less it will be harder for you than if you start something on your own.

If you think of a business that you can do completely on your own, you have the ultimate freedom to do with it what you will. You can ensure that it is a legitimate work from home business by being honest in your promises, and keeping your word. You can over-deliver and price your products fairly so that all may benefit, not just you.

There is 'emotional' language that can compel people to follow you that doesn't have to be 'hype' that will make them mistrust you. Lots of people know the 'if it is too good to be true it probably is' saying, and plenty of them have fallen for false promises and are now skeptical. It doesn't put you in a good light if you have to start right off defending your integrity rather than to be promoting your actual business.

It is always the ideal situation if you use or have used the product yourself so that you can be totally honest in your assessments. You know the other saying, 'it is not what you say but how you say it', and if you truly believe what you are saying because you know first-hand, then what you say will ring true. If you haven't used them, it is a good idea to have honest testimonials from people that have.

Facts and figures also go a long way in conveying that yours is a legitimate work from home business. When you quote statistics or ratings always be sure to provide the source of that information to make doubly sure that people trust what you are saying. Honesty is always important and having tangible proof is the ideal whenever possible.

Professional Women Really Can Be Moms Too!

At the risk of alienating all of the members of the woman's liberation movement, I have to say that I don't think that they have done women any favors. June Cleaver and Mrs. Cunningham had it made being stay-at-home moms. But this is 2008, and most of us have to choose between a great career and borderline poverty if we want to stay at home and raise our children. Is it really possible to be a professional working woman and a great mom too? Absolutely!

Anyone who has tried knows that being a mom is a full-time job. Even if you are the greatest scheduler in the world, there is always someone or something throwing a wrench in the mix. The kids have the flu and can't go to school, the science fair is tomorrow and Billy's volcano won't erupt, so you are up all night before your 9:00 a.m. presentation to the Board of Directors. You have 2 kids in cheerleading that have their first home game today and they really want you there. You know what I am talking about. It never ends and it is really stressful! You have thought about quitting and staying home. But you have a two income budget, years of college education that you paid dearly for, and a need to still use your skills.

The answer to all of this is to work from home. You have to change your perspective a little, but the benefits make any growing pains worthwhile. First of all, you will save tons of money by working from home. You don't have to buy suits and can work in your pajamas. If the baby throws up on you, there are no dry cleaning bills for your pajamas. You will save money on gas and commuting and at $4.00/gallon, those saving will add up quickly. Day care costs used to eat up the majority of my paycheck. Having to eat out on the run is less healthy and much more expensive than cooking real food from scratch at home. So while your initial concern might be how you will live without a full-time paycheck, you will find that your stay-at-home expenses are much lower than your working mom expenses.

Also in the money saving category, is that you will definitely save money on "guilt gifts". When I was working outside the home, I always felt guilty that my children didn't have a full-time mommy, so I was much more inclined to give in to the wishes of my children when we were out shopping. Not only is that bad for the budget, but it is really bad for your children to give them everything that they ask for. Among the benefits of being at home with your children is that they get to have YOU, not a caregiver, putting the Band-Aids on, watching and praising those first steps, helping with homework, sewing their prom dresses and teaching them to cook. The benefits to your children are endless. I don't mean to insult the work-away-from-home moms, but there is NO real substitute (except maybe Grandma) for you in your child's life and development. No one can be a better mommy to your children than you. All the experts in the world cannot take your place.

Okay, so now you are saying, "Sure this is a great idea, but is it really possible." It absolutely is. There are a few things that you have to do to make it successful, but you really can work at home. (Watch for future articles where I will get into the specifics of mommy time-management, budgeting for stay-at-home moms, and wealth building while changing diapers.) My children are all out of the diaper stage, so the new moms may think that I have it easier, but each stage of child development comes with its own set of blessings and challenges. FYI, I am a mother of seven adopted children, so I speak from experience, and have dealt with almost every possible parenting scenario.

Motherhood aside, anywhere that you research making money and building wealth, those who own their own businesses develop wealth much easier than those who work for someone else. Many business do have telecommuting opportunities these days, so depending upon your field of expertise, you may have some very viable work-at-home options through your employer. I never did. I worked for years part-time as an accountant going in very early or very late to work a few hours. But there was never enough money, and child care was ALWAYS an issue. The solution for me and for more and more moms is to have our own businesses. I actually have three businesses, and hope by the end of this year to get to the point where my husband can quit his job also and stay at home to help with my business and home-schooling the children.

Home based businesses are growing by leaps and bounds. The tax advantages to being a business owner are huge. To be successful, you must be organized and diligent. No one is going to pay you for watching soap operas, but you can write an article on your laptop during intermission at the ballet recital, or depending upon your business, network with other moms at the ball game. I listen to training cds in the van while we are traveling to do the grocery shopping, or go to the latest away game. I read motivational books in the 2 minutes a day that I get to be in the bathroom by myself. Three pages a day is over 1,000 pages a year of great reading!

Here is where I give you the call to action. You can keep doing what you are doing and stress over all the time you are not spending with your children, or you can start a home based business, and build wealth while raising really happy, healthy kids. It is possible! You don't have to give up your grownup career in order to play hopscotch with little Suzie. You can have the best of both worlds, and truly have it all. Start part-time if you are afraid to jump in with both feet. But give it a set, regular amount of time and consistently build your business until you can be both a full-time mom and a successful entrepreneur. I will be here cheering for you!

7th Annual Female Board Members Survey Proves Staffing Women Leaders In Business Improves Companies

The Forum of Executive Women, the region's premier organization of influential women leaders in business, today released the research results from its 7th annual Women on Boards survey, a look at how the boards at the 100 largest publicly held companies in the Philadelphia region reflect gender diversity.

Although this year's research shows slow progress in several areas, it will take more than 70 years at the current rate to reach parity in local boardrooms. And Philadelphia companies continue to trail the national average for the number of women leaders in business .

The research, conducted by The Forum of Executive Women's Executive Suites committee in concert with professional services firm Deloitte & Touche USA LLP, entitled "Women on Boards 2007: The Time Has Come," is based on 2006 data reported by the region's 100 largest public companies. Here are key findings:

o The number of female board members here increased less than 1 percent over the previous research year - from 9.73 percent in 2005 to 10.41 percent in 2006.

o The numbers are better for the 15 local companies in the Fortune 500, with 13.77 percent women board members. However, this lags the national 2006 Catalyst figure of 14.6 percent for Fortune 500 companies overall.

o The percentage of women leaders in business serving in executive positions remained stagnant - with 8.7 percent in 2006, compared to 8.61 percent in 2006. This number is tracked because it represents a key "pool" for board candidates. Of those executives listed as most highly compensated, women made up 6.48 percent of those reported as top earners.

o Overall racial diversity on boards decreased by 1 percent, while the number of seats filled by African-American women declined from 7.14 percent in 2005 to 5.75 percent in 2006. The number of Asian-American women holding board seats also dropped, from 2.38 percent in 2005 to 1.08 percent in 2006.

o In 2005, 43 companies had no female board members; in 2006 that number dropped to 40, a positive sign.

o It appears that "early adopters" - those companies which have added women directors over the past few years - are gaining momentum. Published research points to the critical mass or "tipping point" of a minimum of three female board members or 25 percent. In our region, seven area companies - Charming Shoppes, Inc., CIGNA Corporation, Genesis HealthCare Corporation, Harleysville National Corporation, Kenexa Corporation, Penn Virginia Resource Partners, and Mothers Work, Inc., now have boards comprised of at least 25 percent women members.

The report, now available online at http://www.foew.com, shows that despite what is a significant pool of qualified female executives and an acknowledgement of the importance of boards reflecting the demographics of their constituencies, most area public companies are still not making sufficient progress to place women on their corporate boards.

What Does This Mean?
"At the current improvement rate, it will take nearly 50 years for executive women leaders in business to reach gender parity, and nearly 75 years to reach parity in board seats," said Elva L. Bankins, President of The Forum of Executive Women, and Senior Vice President at CEO Resources, Inc. "While there is some encouraging data, the numbers are essentially flat. So we must continue to engage in discussions with our corporate leaders to identify the obstacles and take advantage of all opportunities to make strategic and meaningful improvements. It is essential that we remove the barriers that are keeping our region from reaching its fullest potential."

"There is greater pressure on companies today than ever before," said Bankins. "Times have changed. Having female board members is not just 'the right thing to do,' but is essentially required in today's climate of increased corporate governance scrutiny under Sarbanes Oxley. We can only hope that United States companies will make more rapid progress voluntarily before further regulatory intervention. If not, we may just have to learn from countries like Norway. In 2002, with only 3 percent female representation on boards, Norway mandated that 40 percent of its public companies' board members be female. And that certainly got people's attention."

"Faced with a war for talent and demanding expectations for performance, organizations that promote women into leadership positions will have an opportunity to add diversity, capability, momentum and a strong ethical base to their ranks", said Tara Weiner, Managing Partner Greater Philadelphia, Deloitte & Touche. "We need to recognize that tapping into the full pool of talent makes economic sense in a competitive landscape."

Published research also shows a strong correlation between higher shareholder returns and a higher proportion of women leaders in business serving as executives. A decades-long study of Fortune 500 companies by the Glass Ceiling Research Center at Pepperdine University showed that the companies with the very best records for promoting women tended to be the most profitable. Gender-diverse companies are 69 percent more profitable, according to a study published several years ago in the Harvard Business Review.

"It is often the female board members who raise the most questions about how a company is cultivating a diverse pool of employees to support its succession planning and whether the pool includes women and people of color," says Vicki W. Kramer, co-author of "Critical Mass on Corporate Boards: Why Three or More Women Enhance Corporate Governance," released last fall by the Wellesley Centers for Women. According to the study, three women board members are the "tipping point." Only 76 boards among the Fortune 500 have three or more female members, and only seven in this region meet that threshold.

"It's a mindset among top executives," said Michael Useem, Professor of Management at The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. "But research confirms that when governing board members are diverse, their firms are less likely to break the law and more likely to perform well." A July 2007 study by New York-based Catalyst found that "gender stereotyping" was one of the key barriers to women's advancement in corporate leadership, regardless of leadership styles, resulting in organizations' routinely underestimating and underutilizing women's leadership talent.

As a result of these statistics and studies, The Forum of Executive Women is focusing its efforts on several fronts to increase the number of women on corporate boards. The Forum offers direct support by providing names of qualified female candidates to companies seeking to diversify their boards. The group also continues to work closely with search firms that advise corporations on board appointments; and to mentor and coach rising women to develop their leadership skills. The Forum will also work with women leaders in business who are already on corporate boards to increase the number of boards on which they serve, and work more closely with those "early adopter" companies. A new initiative will help build critical mass by targeting those 40 companies who have no female board members -- requesting direct meetings with each of them over the next 24 months to identify and resolve barriers.

The Forum also continues to share information with a network of similar regional organizations across the United States, all of which work to advance women to positions of power in the business world, primarily to boards of directors and executive suites. All of the regional data, including California, Chicago, Florida, Georgia, Massachusetts, Michigan, Philadelphia and Wisconsin, will be available in Spring 2008.

The "Women on Boards 2007" report is a joint initiative of the Forum of Executive Women and Deloitte, which helped fund and conduct the research. Founded in 1977, The Forum of Executive Women, a network of 300 of the most influential women leaders in business in the region, fulfills its mission to advance women leaders by supporting women in leadership roles, promoting parity and serving as a resource for the corporate world, mentoring young women for future leadership, and providing a forum for the exchange of views, contacts and information.
