Be Positive - 2010 is the Right Time to Start a Business Or Change a Career!

Many people dream of developing their own business and working for themselves: No one to answer to, the freedom to choose their profession, their own work hours and where they work. Such options surely tantalize those with the entrepreneurial spirit and the ambition to make it on their own. For many the dream comes true as the barriers to starting a small business in the U.S. are minimal and there is practically an industry to help people start one.

The fear of failure, the emotional and financial risks do demand courage and a belief in yourself. Yes, our current economy is challenging as people are spending only what they need rather than want. The state of California's statistics on unemployment and other economic measures are a grim reminder that the state of business is uncertain. Coaching is a proven method to assist the executive and entrepreneur overcome these fears and focus on specific means to achieve their goals. Coaching is a positive affirmation to finding a path to success and many career coaches are making a real difference to people's lives by helping them retool and repurpose their skills so they are employable. Resume writing and coaching to find one's set of unique skills so one can articulate them clearly and forcefully is a huge industry.

Coaching to positive career choices and finding talent is critical to business leaders especially during these down cycles. We have indeed suffered a long decline in housing values and unemployment, but the foundation of what makes California and the US a strong and vibrant nation is that the most leaders continue to strive for success and recognize that improvements in the business cycle are inevitable. Call it positive thinking or cock-eyed optimism but this positive approach to business and to life is what we call the entrepreneurial or American spirit. Coaches inspire leaders to stay on a positive track. Coaches also help those who have lost their jobs find a solid path back to employment.

Small businesses leaders who are optimists can more easily adapt to rapid change. Thus small businesses are recognized as longstanding contributors to job creation in the new and innovative fields. It takes courage and creativity to start a new business when you read about negative economic issues but people are creating new businesses everyday.

While many ponder their jobless state with dread and ignore their options, entrepreneurs see opportunity and become inspired. A new entrepreneur is born every time they have a new idea! Here are some facts that demonstrate the willpower and perseverance of the human spirit. The list below provides insight into how during a time of deep despair and trouble some people were inventive. This list contains things we either use daily or have certainly enjoyed at one time or another. And all these things were produced in a depressed economy, the late 1930's and 1940's.

1. First clothes dryer 1935

2. FM Radio 1933

3. Scrabble game 1948 - invented after Alfred Butts lost his job in 1931

4. Carvel Ice Cream 1929 with $15 dollars, first store in 1934

5. Clairol at Home Hair coloring kits 1930's

6. Baby Food 1930

7. Polaroid 1937

8. Chocolate Chips 1930 and thus the chocolate chip cookie

If people in the 1930's can create new businesses and innovation without the world wide net, a computer or Facebook imagine the opportunities today for a new invention or idea!

There are many types of business that can be started and not all require you to develop a product and patent. If a person can provide a valued service, there will be demand. The only limitation is the lack of imagination and willpower. Nothing happens overnight. Time can be a friend or a foe. As Thomas Edison demonstrated with the light bulb, great ideas take time to invent and go to market. Many people quit too early. As soon as it becomes hard they close up shop. Many of the most successful people had early business failures, but later found success. Coaching helps the entrepreneur realize they face common issues and that they can persevere.

No one can predict how the economy will grow in late 2010 or in 2011, but concerns with the double-dip recession should not stop you from investing in yourself and becoming an entrepreneur. Imagine the possibilities if you can manage success during a struggling economy...when things improve, your challenge will be meeting the rising demand for your services or products. Be positive and the world always has opportunities around the corner...
