10 Great Careers For Stay-at-Home Moms

Men, unlike women, do not have to go through the dilemma of whether to stay at home with the kids or just continue with their careers. Every mother, on the other hand, would have to deal with this issue at one point in her life. Well, distressed mom, worry no more because you don't have to choose from your career or being an ever-present mother to your kids anymore.

Here are ten great careers that many moms could choose to undertake:

1. Freelance Writing. You would be surprised at how many jobs you can have under this category. You can be an academic writer, an editor, a novelist, a copywriter, a blogger, a ghost writer--name it and the online world would be able to cough it up for you. What you would need to set up: your place of solitude and a computer (with a reliable Internet connection). Also, you've got to establish, from the very beginning, what type of writing you would like to engage into.

2. Transcription. Many transcription companies now allow their employees to do their jobs at home. There are many types of transcription jobs--legal, medical, general, etc. All you would need is great hearing, a foot pedal, computer and excellent typing skills.

3. Online tutorials. If you love teaching, then this is the perfect home-based job for you. First, you need to have a clientele (there are a lot of them online or you could get them through referrals). Also, there are companies who hire tutors and who allow them to do their tutorials at home. And since this is another online job, you would need a computer, a webcam, and a headset (you could replace this with a PC microphone and a pair of speakers).
4. Selling baked goodies, pasta, etc. If you are the type who loves to cook, then there is also a career that would be perfect for you. Why don't you consider baking your favorite cookies or even cakes, and start selling them? First, sell them to people that you know (friends, relatives or neighbors) and once these people give you referrals, you could start selling to them, too. Don't expect that it would be a grand business (unless you're willing to go big time and put in a hefty capital, hire some employees, and all that). This is also applicable to businesses such as sewing, knitting, candle-making, jewelry, preserved food, etc.). Putting up a business at home could have its down side, too, but still, you do get to spend extra hours with your family.

5. Desktop Publishing. DTP is a combination of WYSIWYG software for page layout and a personal computer. This is used in creating documents for publication (page layouts with photos, graphics, text, and other visuals with the use of certain computer software such as Scribus, Apple Pages, Microsoft Publisher, Adobe, or QuarkXPress.

For stay-at-home moms with limited capitals, you can use an ordinary printer (yeah, that's the small one) and start a business like this. If you want to go on a larger scale, you can hire a vendor to do all the printing jobs.

6. Virtual Assistant Jobs. A VA is a freelance contractor who provides technical, administrative, even creative assistance to her clients. The regular clients include realtors or lawyers. These assistants work at home in their virtual offices. For a VA, the needed tools include: a computer with a dependable Internet connection, fax machine, and a phone.

7. Typing jobs. Unlike transcription jobs where you would need to specialize in medical or legal terms, doing an online data entry job is as easy as 1-2-3. All you would need are excellent typing skills and you're good to go (as you would only need to fill out online survey forms). Most of the companies that offer data entry positions ask for an initial payment of some sort, though. Just be careful in choosing which ones are for real.

8. Internet Marketing. This is also referred to as Internet advertising, e-Marketing, or online marketing. This simply means you sell your products or services online. It is not enough that you have your own computer, you must also possess impeccable marketing skills to be able to survive on this type of career.

9. Affiliate Marketing. Somehow, this is related to Internet marketing except that this one involves some networking as the business gives rewards to affiliates for every visitor or client that they gain.

10. Babysitting. You could have a few, extra money when you opt to take care of your children along with other kids (with parents who are willing to pay up!). And if you love kids, this is just like a walk in the park.

These are just ten out of the hundreds of possible careers that homemakers could opt for. If you want to find out about other choices, they're just a click of a mouse away!
